<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:

Natural History will present a special lecture--<b><i><span style='font-weight:

bold;font-style:italic'>’s Dilemma: Animals, Ethics and Us </span></i></b>by
Cindy Milburn, Senior Adviser of Research and Development, The International
Fund for Animal Welfare. Members: Free, Non-members: $5.<br>
<br>
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Darwin's famous
treatise "On the Origin of Species" and the 200th anniversary of his
birth, this lecture explores Darwin the man and Darwinism the phenomenon, with
a special focus on Darwin's visionary ideas about the kinship between humans
and animals and how qualities like empathy and altruism fit into his theories
of evolution.<br>
<br>
Over the past 30 years Cindy Milburn has worked in campaigns and projects as
well as on government committees helping wild and domestic animals in developed
and developing countries all over the world. During this time she has seen a
revolutionary change in the attitudes of ordinary people. Ethical consumers and
voters, concerned about the wellbeing of animals, have emerged as a political
force and there has been a gradual acceptance by governments around the world
that they ignore the plight of animals at their peril. Charles Darwin, who was
born 200 years ago in 1809, understood the human desire to protect vulnerable
individuals - humans and animals and this talk is about this aspect of his
life's work.<br>
