the scientific community to better understand our climate system and how people
and ecosystems influence and may be affected by climatic shifts.<SPAN
class=009053615-11022009> </SPAN>Most scientists now agree that
climate <SPAN class=009053615-11022009>as we know it is
changing</SPAN>.<SPAN class=009053615-11022009> </SPAN>Impacts <SPAN
class=009053615-11022009>from global climate change </SPAN>including increased
temperatures, sea level rise and more intense storms are<SPAN
class=009053615-11022009> already being felt</SPAN>.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Recent model projections indicate that
the future climate regime will be different than that of the past.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>As a result, relying on historic climate
data alone will not be sufficient to adequately plan for the future.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">In order to protect people,
infrastructure and the environment, communities will need to enter a new era of
planning that specifically integrates changing climate dynamics.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>This type of adaptive planning is
neither easy nor straightforward given that resources are limited and there is
uncertainty in climate predictions.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</SPAN>Decision-makers therefore need <SPAN
class=009053615-11022009>practical </SPAN>information and guidance to support
this process.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Ultimately,
unless advancements in our understanding of climate become incorporated into the
fabric of decision-making at the local level, they fall short of benefiting the
public good.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN></P>

style="mso-spacerun: yes"></SPAN> </P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">The <B
style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Plan
to Protect</I></B> workshop <SPAN class=009053615-11022009>will showcase
examples of communities within and outside the state that are engaging in
adaptation planning. These case studies can serve as models to other
communities and will help local decision-makers learn about how to begin
this process. Topics to be addressed include sea level rise, storms,
stormwater, wastewater and fires. Participants will spend time extracting
transferable lessons and practices relevant to their
context. </SPAN><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>The workshop
will also kick-off an opportunity for towns <SPAN
class=009053615-11022009>on </SPAN><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"

</SPAN>to <SPAN class=009053615-11022009>receive technical assistance to
