Horseshoe crabs
All is not well in the world of the horseshoe crab. Issues that were only partially resolved in 1999 and 2000 still haunt this species. Horseshoe crab numbers are declining and we are not managing them in a sustainable fashion.

Wellfleet Bay is hosting a Horseshoe Crab Conference on Saturday April 5, 9 AM to 3 PM. This free conference will feature presentations by local experts, a panel discussion, and posters and exhibits. Presentations include the biology and development of horseshoe crabs by Dr. Daniel Gibson; the management of horseshoe crab fisheries by Alison Leschen of Division of Marine Fisheries; bio-medical uses of these marine invertebrates by Dr. Michael Dawson of Associates of Cape Cod; and population status within the Cape Cod National Seashore by Dr. Mary-Jane James-Pirri. Contact Melissa Lowe for more details.

During their spawning season, from May to July, we will census and tag adult horseshoe crabs on beaches around Wellfleet Harbor. We'll also be counting and measuring juvenile horseshoe crabs. We can use lots of help! Training dates are currently scheduled for April 18, 19, and 26. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator if interested.

Wellfleet Oysters!
For sure, there are just not enough of them. Wellfleet historically had massive beds, banks, or reefs of oysters. These key habitats of the Wellfleet Harbor ecosystem have been lost over time. Our goal is not to find out where they went, but to restore this habitat. First we need to understand the role of oysters, and the habitat they create, in the ecosystem of Wellfleet Harbor. As we get ready to begin our restoration project we will be offering a series of lectures that will highlight the oyster not only as a delectable appetizer, but as an important marine habitat.

Join us on March 19, 7 PM for Biology of Oysters: Their Role in the Environment, a presentation by
Bill Walton, of Barnstable County Cooperative Extension and Woods Hole.
