Already released in Canada, <STRONG><EM>Little Dipper's </EM></STRONG>U.S. launch<STRONG> </STRONG>will be held at 4 PM on <BR />August 30 at Wellfleet Bay. Light refreshments will be served and no registration is required. <STRONG><EM>Little Dipper</EM></STRONG> is Marlene's account of time spent at her rustic cabin in New Brunswick. Marlene will also read for the volunteers and staff at the June 6 Potluck.</P>
<P><FONT face="" size=2><SPAN class=headline><FONT face="" size=2><SPAN class=headline><FONT face="" size=2><SPAN class=headline><FONT face="" size=2><FONT size=3>Working for Wildlife</FONT><BR /></FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN>Cape Cod Field School for Adults<IMG height=102 alt="pipl on nest" src="http://web.massaudubon.org/images/content/pagebuilder/11925.jpg" width=140 align=right border=0 /><BR />July 9 & 10, 2007<BR /></FONT>The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, in partnership with Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge and Mass Audubon's Coastal Waterbird Program, is offering a unique 2-day field program that actively involves participants in the study and management of coastal nesting birds. Participants will work with Coastal Waterbird staff and biologists from Monomoy NWR to study, monitor, manage, and protect endangered coastal birds including piping plovers and common, least, and roseate terns. Participant responsibilities during these intense but rewarding two days may include conducting population censuses, monitoring nest productivity and development of chicks, banding birds, conducting feeding surveys, and erecting fences and exclosures. This is a very active and unique field school that will provide insight into the nature of these birds and the challenges of managing them. Phone 508-349-2615 to register or learn more. <P><SPAN class=headline>From Dennis Murley: The Osprey Project<BR /></SPAN>Most monitored osprey nests across the Cape are reported to have females incubating eggs. Several nests were blown down <IMG height=111 alt="osprey pole" src="http://web.massaudubon.org/images/content/pagebuilder/11890.jpg" width=179 align=right border=0 />during the recent Nor’easter, but all seem to have been quickly rebuilt. The most unusual observation this past month was from Bass River in Dennis near the Highbank Bridge. A pair of ospreys has been busy constructing a nest on a dock that had washed away during a previous storm but landed relatively intact in a nearby marsh, In Centerville, Osterville, and West Yarmouth, ospreys have attempted to nest on chimneys. Present state guidelines allow the removal of nesting material in such “nuisance areas” unless eggs or nestlings are present. Areas where birds are nesting in unusual spots such as chimneys are ripe for erecting new platforms. <BR /><FONT face="" size=3><BR /><STRONG>Wellfleet Bay Wish List</STRONG></FONT><BR />Cleaning out the closets?
