Second Chance to Go Green
Wellfleet Bay is going as green and as paperless as we can. Our spring program brochure included a notice about our mailing lists: whether you wish to receive future copies by U.S. mail or via e-mail. If you missed it, you'll get another chance with the summer program brochure, due out in mid-May. Watch for it. We don't want you to miss a thing, and you must respond to remain on our mailing list!

Hawk Watch News
Volunteer Don Manchester has been counting migrating hawks at Pilgrim Heights in Truro for 10 years! Every April and May, Don and other Wellfleet Bay staff and volunteers set up on the Small Swamp Trail Overlook at Pilgrim Heights in North Truro to watch and count hawks. The public is invited to join us every Saturday morning from 9 AM-noon, weather-permitting (heavy rain, strong wind, or heavy fog will cancel). Our numbers and observations are shared with Eastern Mass Hawk Watch for distribution and analysis. Here at the Sanctuary marsh grasses start to green, buds on trees swell, and soon delicate flowers will emerge bringing forth a variety of feelings from the observer. Artist Patricia Cullinane Whisker takes this inspiration and creates art -- and she will teach us how too with her 2-day class on Botanical Illustration. As Patricia says: "As you observe nature (a flower, a mountain, your cat), an interior aesthetic sense clicks in: you take notice, perceive more accurately and are very pleased with what you see. I call that my inspiration! Something holds my attention and demands to be recognized. I want to share that beauty or vision, therefore I do art. I ask students to pay attention to their inner view of beauty or attraction and try to hold onto the image they have because it’s a very personal experience and it is their vision. This is what we want to capture. We start with a very simple subject that is inspiring to the student and take it from there, looking for a natural structure that is appealing for its form, color, arrangement or humor." Click here to see a slideshow of Patricia's work. Students of all abilities can try their hand at rendering what inspires them in nature and capturing that in graphite, colored pencil, or watercolors in Patricia's classes scheduled for May 16 and May 18. Call the Sanctuary for details.

From Dennis Murley: The Osprey Project
Wellfleet Bay’s Osprey Project is off and running. This citizen-science project has generated much interest and many Cape Codders have volunteered their time to help Wellfleet Bay gather information on this charismatic bird’s activities. The goals of the Osprey Project are to conduct a population census of ospreys on the Cape, map and monitor their existing nests, develop a plan to maintain them, and identify ways to erect new platforms where possible. Currently, local volunteers are monitoring over 30 nest sites from Bourne to Wellfleet twice a week. A volunteer will monitor the Elizabeth Islands by boat as well. Additional nesting sites will be assigned in coming weeks. Several volunteers are searching back roads and waters in the mid and upper Capes to look for nesting activity in previously inactive areas. The information collected by volunteers will be shared with local and state agencies. Data will also be shared with Mass Audubon’s Breeding Bird Atlas. Osprey observations from this past month include established nests where pairs of ospreys have returned, territorial fights, and at least one report of mating. One osprey in Osterville attempted to add a golf club to its nest! I suppose it felt this was the ultimate designer touch. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. The bird got the club to the platform and attempted twice to place it among the sticks of the growing nest, but both times it fell out. A pair of Chatham ospreys was hassled by a crow, but eventually got the upper hand. One osprey was enjoying a fish on the perch at the base of the platform. A pesky crow kept harassing the osprey and slowly sneaking up, step by step, to steal the fish. The osprey would raise its wings and the crow would fly off, only to sneak in again. Finally, the other member of the pair who was sitting atop the platform the whole time took charge. It swooped down and chased the crow across the marsh and out of its territory. Dinner resumed in peace.
