volunteers and interested citizens on how to obtain good counts of river
herring. Volunteers working together can get population estimates of
migrating river herring for a specific river. This information is useful for
determining the health and stability of a local fishery and helps fisheries
managers protect and restore herring runs.</SPAN></B><B
style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"> </SPAN></B><B
style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><SPAN
style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Accurate herring counts are needed in
order to help fisheries managers understand the reasons for the drastic decline
in herring in recent years, and help restore and protect the herring fishery
in herring runs across <st1:place w:st="on">Cape Cod</st1:place>.

style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">APCC is especially seeking
volunteers to count herring along the Stony Brook herring run in Brewster.
APCC is helping the Brewster Conservation Commission and Alewives Committee
explore the feasibility of restoring salt marsh along Stony Brook, which will
help protect herring and improve the habitat quality of the fish run.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Residents from other towns interested in
setting up herring count programs along their runs are also
welcome.</SPAN></B><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"><o:p></o:p></SPAN></B></P>

Purinton, a River Restoration Planner for the Massachusetts Department of Fish
and Game Riverways Program. He will provide training in monitoring
migrating river herring using a simple, standardized method. Purrington
has trained volunteers and watershed association staff up and down the
coast.</SPAN></B><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><SPAN
