face=Arial size=2>About the Department of Conservation and
Recreation:<BR><BR>The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages
one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and
protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational
opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a new and dynamic agency,
formed in 2003 through the merger of the Metropolitan District Commission
and Department of Environmental Management. The DCR system includes over
450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches,
lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails and
parkways.<BR><BR>The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) was
formed by the merger of the Department of Environmental Management and the
Metropolitan District Commission in July 2003. DCR's mission is to
protect, promote and enhance our common wealth of natural, cultural and
recreational resources for the well-being of all. Areas of Critical
Environmental Concern (ACECs) are places in Massachusetts that receive
special recognition because of the quality, uniqueness and significance of
their natural and cultural resources. These areas are identified and
nominated at the community level and are reviewed and designated by the
state's Secretary of Environmental Affairs. ACEC designation creates a
framework for local and regional stewardship of critical resources and
ecosystems. Currently there are 28 ACECs encompassing approximately
241,000 acres in 73 communities. <BR><BR>The intern will directly assist
the ACEC Program Director Elizabeth Sorenson in the environmental review
and public outreach for one of three potential projects, depending on
Program priorities, staff time, and intern skills. Two intern positions
are available.<BR><BR>1) ACEC nomination assistance - A new ACEC
nomination may be submitted to EOEA Secretary Pritchard for formal public
review in spring of 2006. The proposed 14,200-acre Three Mile River ACEC,
in the city and towns of Taunton, Norton, and North Dighton, borders two
existing ACECs. The intern will help gather and assess environmental
resource information, manage files, track and manage nomination
correspondence, and coordinate community outreach and participation. Site
visits and evening meetings may be required.<BR><BR>2) Resource management
planning. Assistance is required for a public presentation and outreach to
municipalities to follow up on a 2005 planning project in the Parker
River/Essex Bay ACEC on the Massachusetts, North Shore. That project,
contracted to UMass Urban Harbors Institute (UHI), included an update of a
municipal environmental regulatory assessment, interviews for municipal
environmental priorities, and recommended future conservation actions.
Projects may include updating powerpoint presentations, attending regional
meetings, researching applicable grants, and other outreach products based
on priorities recommended by groups and municipalities.<BR><BR>3) Lakes
and ponds management plans - Preliminary research for resource management
plans for 7 Great Ponds in the Squannassit and Petapawag ACECs is needed
to assist the municipalities. These lakes and ponds, located in the towns
of Ayer, Dunstable, Groton, Pepperell, Shirley and Pepperell, vary in size
from approximately 10 to 190 acres. The intern may work on environmental
resource inventory and analysis, identification of management and
regulatory issues, and/or development of management recommendations.
Depending on abilities and interests, projects can include field research,
town office research, mapping, public outreach and interviews, and
synthesis of existing natural resource reports.<BR></FONT></TD></TR>
