Position Announcement: Aquaculture Specialist and Shellfish Hatchery
Manager<br>
<br>
Definition: The Aquaculture Specialist and Shellfish Hatchery Manager
is responsible for operating a hatchery and nursery for bivalve
mollusks and harvest of eelgrass seed. Currently, the facility is
primarily operated to produce seed for public restoration efforts in
local towns through a contract with Barnstable County. The hatchery
manager will also be expected to participate in on-going and new
research projects directed at improving technology and husbandry for
bivalve mollusk culture. Finally, the hatchery serves as an
educational resource and the manager will interact with cadets and the
general public.<br>

Duties and Responsibilities: Oversee hatchery operations including
management of student workers and volunteers, algae culture, shellfish
culture, and contribute to the maintenance of the facility; Help
establish hatchery production goals, protocols, and scheduling; Assist
in the development of research grant proposal utilizing the shellfish
hatchery; Oversee any student projects and give tours to school and
other educational groups as needed; Participate in any on-campus
functions such as Open Houses, Science Camps, etc.<br>

Experience: Possess a working knowledge of bivalve hatchery
operations, including: microalgae culture, broodstock conditioning and
spawning, larval culture of bivalve mollusks, providing suitable
conditions for bivalve metamorphosis, and nursery culture of oyster,
bay scallop and other bivalve mollusks. Practical mechanical skills
are desired, including hatchery plumbing, operation and maintenance of
an upweller, apparatus tank stands and small-boat handling and
maintenance. Must have the ability to work independently. Strong
interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to develop and
maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse community,
including professors, undergraduate students, state regulators, and
shellfish harvesters and growers. Supervisory ability for student
workers is needed. Computer literacy is necessary. An ability to
maintain organized records and to write fluently for technical
instruction, research proposal development and scientific publication
is needed.<br>

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university
with advanced courses in marine science or related field with at least
two to three years; experience in a shellfish hatchery. Experience in
implementing original shellfish hatchery concepts in either a
commercial or research setting.<br>
