The Silent Landscape:
The Scientific Voyage of HMS Challenger

The voyage of HMS Challenger was one of the most important marine
expeditions of the Victorian age. Sent out to gather information about
the ocean and ocean floor, its real mission was to confirm Darwin's new
theory of evolution. Put simply, it was a test between God and Science.
Of the 243 men who left England in December 1872, only 144 returned
after three years and more than 68,000 nautical miles. The Silent
Landscape is the story of this epic voyage and the science
that it discovered, which forever changed the way we view the oceans. <a
