I think since we gave workshop participants option to be involved (which many of them took) maybe we could do the more simple 1 step process? Or if we do 2 step process, then keep the timing for workshop participants only to be very short - give them a week to review it and informally comment and then take a week for us to go over their changes. Then say 1 month for broader community (and workshop participants can participate then too if they want) with presumably a more formal structure. Maybe we can decide once we see how polished/complete the rough draft is. <p>Thank you for your continued efforts and contributions to the
science plan that will emerge from our workshop. <br>
</p>
<p><b>Timeline </b>- Given the events of the past week, with school
closures and everyone struggling to transition to virtual teaching
and working from home (many with children at home), I think it's
important that we reevaluate and maintain reasonable expectations.
We are still uncertain about the OCB workshop (in person vs.
virtual options, making final call in early April), so I don't
think that has to be a driver of our timeline. Highest priority is
to develop a cohesive and compelling document. If you are having a
hard time getting your draft sections completed by tomorrow 3/18,
take the time you need to finish. I am working on an NSF proposal
right now (deadline end of March), so I will not have capacity to
contribute anything more until that is submitted. As you finish
your sections, please continue to drop your <u>clearly labeled
files</u> into the <a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1GQG73F5mXT4K5mYxoB-MRMSC1RfgRkkt?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Workshop
Report google folder</a>. Once I'm free from proposal, I will
start assembling sections into a single document. If I don't have
anything from you, I will check back in with you at the end of
March - but if you need more time, I have plenty of material to
get started on assembling the full document, as a lot of people
have started adding content. If you have any trouble accessing any
of these folders or documents, please let me know. <br>

<p><b>Review process and rollout - </b>I will aim (but not promise)
to have a complete draft of the plan for distribution to workshop
participants and the broader community for review by early May.
Question for you all - do you think we could just do a single
review process with workshop participants and US SOLAS community
all at once, or do you think there is an advantage to a 2-phase
review process, starting with workshop participant review,
incorporating their feedback, and then opening up to the broader
community? Once the draft is ready, we will commence the review
process, which typically takes ~1 month, depending on which
mechanism you prefer. <br>

<p>Given this timeline, we are probably looking at a summer time
(July-ish?) completion (formatted/DOI'd). I emailed with Rachel
about various ways to get the word out once completed. Special
eNews alerts from OCB, SOLAS, and partner programs, targeted
emails to agency managers, social media, perhaps a brief webinar
presentation to go over the document highlights? To this end, it
may be useful to generate a short and simple slide deck and
accompanying poster for all OAIC members to use as they go about
their meetings/travels to help spread the word. <br>
</p>
<p><b>Figures</b> - I think the document will be more compelling
(and enjoyable to read!) with illustrative figures. They need not
be a requirement for every chapter, but as you assemble your
chapters, please be thinking about potential figures. They can
come from the peer-reviewed literature, the <a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1m9VHp3Z6MU4TzOYAlWps8WUuVOrMt1Mv?usp=sharing" target="_blank">workshop
presentations </a>(with permission and proper citation), etc.
If published, they can either be modified slightly or we can
obtain necessary copyright permissions for originals. <u>If you
choose to add figures, please clearly label them so they are
consistent with your text</u>.<br>
</p>
<p>I really like SOLAS's puzzle/process schematic. I think it would
be really nice to use a simplified version of that schematic as a
backdrop, upon which we could add visual references to some our
crosscutting topics. Thoughts about such a process-based schematic
to help tie the whole thing together and link to the internat'l
plan? <br>
</p>
<p><b>Table</b> - I think it's a great idea to share the <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hlzSBl0Fn3jJ5_Lqztt4cz1YMejpgCPuJ6loMPMhM3o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">table</a>
with workshop participants now (while we are writing/assembling)
so that they can start populating it with US SOLAS observing
assets. If you wish to modify the table (add more
worksheets/platforms, add/edit columns/headings in the various
worksheets, etc.), please do so ASAP. I'll aim to share the table
with workshop participants by end of day tomorrow. <br>
</p>
