<span style="background:white">The successful applicant
will investigate water-mass formation and
transformation in the coastal polynyas distributed on
the Antarctica continental shelves. The work will be
based on a range of observations including
instrumented seals, which regularly sample
water-masses in coastal polynyas. Polynyas will be
detected using satellite and atmospheric reanalysis
observations based on a method developed by Labrousse
et al. (2018), in close coordination with Sara
Labrousse (WHOI). The study will extend work that we
develop to understand large-scale water-mass formation
around the Southern Ocean (Pellichero et al., 2018),
in which we demonstrated that existing under sea-ice
observation databases allow to quantify water-mass
transformation associated with sea-ice and atmospheric
processes. The ultimate goal is to isolate and assess
the global impact of polynyas on large-scale
water-mass transformation, and their overall impact on
the overturning circulation by producing dense
water-masses on antarctica continental shelf.
Depending on the advance of the project, and the
motivation of the successful candidate, overflow of
dense shelf water (produced in the polynyas) on the
continental slope toward the Southern Ocean abysses
might be investigated using autonomous deep floats we
deployed in East Antarctica and in the Weddell Sea as
part of the WAPITI project. </span><br>

<span style="background:white">The project is
exploratory and will start by assessing what can be
obtained given the available dataset, before digging
in the dataset, to extract relevant information for
our understanding of ocean circulation and climate. We
particularly seek a researcher with an interest in and
talent in ocean observation analysis and ability in
dealing with large and diverse sources of ocean
observation to develop deeper dynamical understanding
of ocean circulation and climate. The researcher will
join a team of scientists at LOCEAN-IPSL in Paris
(J.B. Sallee; C. de Lavergne; J-B Charrassin) and will
strongly collaborate with phD and other postdoc
working on the WAPITI project, as well as external
collaborators based at WHOI (S. Labrousse) and
Australia (CSIRO, IMAS). </span></span></span><span
