<li>Description: <span>NOAA Fisheries' Office of Science
and Technology (ST) promotes and ensures the sound
scientific basis for NOAA Fisheries science programs
and resource conservation and management decisions.
The Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP)
focuses on collecting, analyzing, and reporting
recreational fishing data. MRIP was initiated by NOAA
Fisheries as a state-federal collaborative working
with the interstate fisheries commissions and other
relevant agencies to reassess and redesign how
recreational data are collected, analyzed, and used.
MRIP is the new way NOAA Fisheries is collecting,
analyzing and reporting recreational fishing data.
MRIP is comprised of a number of teams and regional
partners that work together to ensure that the data
collected through MRIP surveys are held to the highest
standard. One of these teams, the MRIP Communication
and Education Team (CET) carries out strategic
communications to ensure partners and stakeholders are
engaged in the survey redesign processes and help
build national and regional-level awareness and
support for the program.</span></li>

<span>PhD Research Assistantship in Public Health-Related
Water Microbiology</span></div>
<ul>
<li> Organization: <span>University of South Florida,
College of Marine Science</span></li>
<li>Location: St Petersburg, Florida and <span>Costa Rica</span></li>
<li>Description: The genomics laboratory run by Dr. Mya
Breitbart at the University of South Florida, College of
Marine Science in St. Petersburg, Florida
(<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.marine.usf.edu/genomics">http://www.marine.usf.edu/genomics</a>), seeks a highly
motivated PhD student to work on a NSF-funded Coastal
SEES project investigating the integration of water
quality and ethnographic data into a risk-based,
holistic water management approach as an alternative to
standard compliance water quality monitoring. The study
will integrate water quality, epidemiological, and
ethnographic data in order to estimate risk and ways in
which to decrease risk using exploratory quantitative
microbial risk assessment. During the course of the
investigation, the most appropriate indicator of fecal
pollution will be identified for a tropical setting.
Working together with a collaborative and
transdisciplinary team of researchers from the United
States and Costa Rica, the PhD student will be
specifically tasked with water quality sample collection
in Costa Rica, enteric virus analyses using (RT)-qPCR,
as well as analyzing the correlation between indicators,
reference pathogens, and environmental parameters. The
PhD student will work closely with postdoctoral
researcher Erin Symonds, who will be executing the
quantitative microbial risk assessments, during all
facets of the project. This project will require two,
three-month field collections in Costa Rica;
consequently, the ideal candidate should have at least
basic Spanish language skills and a willingness to
travel and perform field work. The most qualified
candidate will also have experience analyzing
environmental water samples using molecular methods,
specifically using quantitative PCR, and have a basic
understanding of statistics. Ideally, the PhD student
will start during 2017, in either the spring (January)
or summer (May) semesters. Interested applicants should
send their CV, unofficial transcript, and a cover letter
to both Dr. Mya Breitbart (<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="mailto:mya@usf.edu">mya@usf.edu</a>) and Erin Symonds
(<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="mailto:esymonds@mail.usf.edu">esymonds@mail.usf.edu</a>). At a minimum, the cover letter
should include a description of relevant past experience
and skills, as well as available start date, current
GPA, and GRE scores (if available). The review of
applications will begin September 1, 2016 and continue
until the position is filled.</li>
