The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Marine
Science has an opening for a POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE in
bio-optical – physical oceanography for membership in USM’s real
time Ocean Weather Laboratory (<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated"
href="http://www.usm.marine/research-owx">www.usm.marine/research-owx</a>)
which specializes in real-time biological and physical ocean
properties in the Gulf of Mexico. The research position will address
new approaches to defining the spatial and temporal variability of
bio-optical properties in the open and coastal waters and how they
are coupled with the physical processes. The position requires
expertise in software processing of satellite ocean color processing
(SeaDas-VIIRS, MODIS) for defining the spatial and temporal
correlation scales. Expertise is also required for in situ
collection and processing of ocean optics data (IOP, AOP) and
validation of spectral radiometry and relationships within water
constituents ( i.e CDOM, Chl, particles, scattering , etc).<br

The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team of
senior and early-career scientists; in the Consortium for Coastal
River-Dominated Ecosystems (CONCORDE) to explore the exchange of
water masses across the Mississippi Shelf through analyses of ocean
circulation models, satellite bio-optical properties and in situ
ship and glider measurements. This ocean team is composed of experts
in remote sensing, in situ measurements and ocean modeling from USM
and the Naval Research Laboratory both co-located at Stennis. The
successful candidate will have a doctorate in oceanography to
participate with team members to integrate bio-optical properties
with physical processes.<br class="">
<br class="">
The candidate will work closely with CONCORDE’s PIs and graduate
students. Salary is competitive, and benefits include health
insurance and retirement options. The position will be at USM’s
Department of Marine Science located at Stennis Space Center in
Hancock County, MS, the single-largest concentration of
oceanographers in the world. The successful candidate will be
required to pass a NASA background security check to work at
Stennis, and a USM employment background check.<br class="">

CONCORDE is a newly funded consortium under the Gulf of Mexico
Research Initiative consisting of 16 researchers from The University
of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Naval
Research Laboratory, Old Dominion University, Oregon State
University, Rutgers University, and the University of South Alabama.
Post-doctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students will
be mentored according to a CONCORDE mentoring plan, and all are
expected to participate in annual conferences and consortium team
discussions. For more information about the Gulf of Mexico Research
Initiative visit: <a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated"
