We seek a postdoctoral research associate to pursue a novel data synthesis or modeling project within the area of climate impacts on zooplankton in mid- to high-latitude seas. The project will be part of a National Science Foundation funded project:
“Copepod life history and lipid strategy in a changing Arctic — A new trait-based approach to data synthesis,
modeling, and end-to-end integration.” This project is centered on application and testing of the Coltrane (Copepod Life-history Traits and Adaptation to Novel Environments) model, a new, trait-based model that predicts copepod community structure and
abundance as a function of environmental variables (temperature and prey availability), in order to serve as a bridge from oceanographic processes to higher trophic levels. The postdoc will be co-advised by biophysical modeler Neil
Banas and biological oceanographer Julie Keister.

Candidates are invited but not required to propose their own project ideas. Project possibilities include

Analysis of hypothesized drivers of zooplankton variability—primary production magnitude and timing, temperature, transport—in the Northeast Pacific, in order to unify existing theories of climate impacts on large zooplankton and fisheries in the California
Current, Gulf of Alaska, and Bering Sea. This project would require experience working with large datasets and some knowledge of physical oceanography.

Global or pan-Arctic applications of the Coltrane model, with emphasis on formulation of a theory of geographic and temporal variation in predation and other mortality on copepods. This project would require experience in mathematical ecology and some knowledge
of biological oceanography.

Location: The position is based at the University of Washington School of Oceanography, a world-class center for marine research. However, the postdoc is also encouraged to spend part or all of the duration
of the position working with Banas as a visitor at University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. The Marine Population Modeling group of the Strathclyde Mathematics and Statistics Department is an active center of research on end-to-end linkages between
the marine environment and fisheries and conservation problems. Generous support for travel between Glasgow, Seattle, and other collaborating research groups is available.

The postdoctoral project is expected to run for 18 months, although an extension may be possible based on mutual interest and funding. The appointment is initially for one year, with renewal based on satisfactory performance. The start date is flexible.
A Ph.D. in oceanography, mathematical ecology, or an allied field is required. Experience with cross-disciplinary problems is preferred.

Please submit a detailed CV, cover letter explaining your research interests and experience, and three references via email to Dr. Banas atneil.banas@strath.ac.uk. Please state your preference
and flexibility regarding an extended visit to University of Strathclyde and also regarding start date. Questions about the position can be addressed to either Dr. Banas or Dr. Keister (jkeister@uw.edu).
Review of applications will be ongoing beginning April 15.
