biodiversity, for the benefit of humanity. The Senior
Social Scientist leads development and implementation of
a focused research program and provides broader guidance
from a social science perspective in support of this
mission. This position requires a broad knowledge of
social science as it relates to the natural environment,
experience of social science theories and methods in
applied settings, and strong expertise in quantitative
analysis, innovation, and communication to advance
conservation solutions based on a foundation of sound
social science. This is a high-profile position within
an organization that values innovation and a strong
grounding of strategy and implementation in science; the
Senior Social Scientist thus regularly represents CI
externally, contributes to shaping and implementation of
CI strategy through interaction with CI Leadership and
all CI programs, and provides authoritative advocacy for
social science within the institution. The Senior Social
Scientist collaborates closely with other staff in CI,
including the Moore Center for Science and Oceans (with
expertise in biodiversity, ecosystem services,
environmental economics, climate change, spatial
planning, policy design, monitoring systems and other
fields) and the Center for Environment and Peace,
(focusing on International Policy, Social Policy,
Indigenous Peoples and Stakeholder Engagement and
Environmental Peace) as well as business and field
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography seeks applicants
for a postdoctoral research position investigating
physical properties of the Ross Ice Shelf with broadband
seismic array data. The ideal starting date of the
position is on or before 1 September 2014 and is
negotiable. The position is for one year with possible
renewal for a second year subject to performance and
funding availability. The position is based in La Jolla,
California.

The successful applicant will work mainly with broadband
seismic array data collected by a widely distributed
34-station array on the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) Antarctica.
The seismic stations will be deployed
continuously for two years. The goal of this project is
to determine the variability of ice shelf properties
from elastic and stress wave propagation characteristics
of signals forced by ocean swell and infra-gravity (IG)
wave impacts at the shelf front. Areas of investigation
may include and are not limited to: the dynamic elastic
and mechanical response of the RIS to oceanic forcings;
signal propagation from the shelf front through the RIS
to the grounding zone; and signal excitation at the base
of the ice shelf by IG waves penetrating the sub-shelf
water cavity.

Proficiency in Matlab, or a suitable substitute, and an
understanding of principles of seismic wave propagation
and microseism characteristics are required. Previous
experience in seismic array processing and ice rheology
is highly desirable.
