project funded by a National Science Foundation
Sustainable Energy Pathways grant is using the Puget
Sound as a case study for developing a toolkit to
assess the viability of commercial-level tidal
energy production. Devices capable of harnessing
tidal hydrokinetic energy are nearing commercial
readiness. However, the tools to assess the
prospects for¡ªand limitations of¡ªlarge-scale,
sustainable use of tidal energy are underdeveloped
and a comprehensive synthesis of pilot project
results has not been completed. In order to fill
this knowledge gap, a multi-disciplinary team of
researchers is developing scenarios for large-scale
electricity generation from tidal currents in order
to balance the benefits of predictable, renewable
power generation against engineering feasibility,
environmental compatibility, and societal
considerations. Specifically, the human dimensions
component of the project examines public values and
perceptions of tidal energy and also explores the
potential for anticipatory governance of tidal
energy. Anticipatory governance involves an
innovative set of techniques for engaging latent
stakeholder communities, identifying potential
unintended consequences, and proactively addressing
societal concerns during the research and
development process.

President, APFD Marine is a new position created

The VP will provide leadership and support to APFD

University but also including the Southeast Asia
Aquarium in Singapore and other regional

number of important marine initiatives in the
Asia-Pacific region (including Pacific
initiatives, the seascapes programs in the Bird's
Head and Sulu-Sulawesi, and the Coral Triangle
Initiative). The VP APFD Marine will report
directly to the Senior Vice President of the Asia
Pacific Field Division, and will coordinate
closely with Asia-Pacific country program leads

Post-Doctoral position in tropical marine ecology
at the Central Caribbean Marine Institute is
available at our Little Cayman Research Centre
facility in the Cayman Islands. The primary goal
of the research is to assess and more fully
understand factors that influence coral reef
resilience. Consistent with that goal, we expect
that the successful candidate will focus his or
her research efforts on a relevant area of marine
science. The research, however, should be of broad
ecological interest. We are particularly
interested in attracting innovative, early career
scientists with demonstrated field and laboratory
experience and strong publication potential.</span></p>

The Office of Science and Technology Policy
advises the President on the effects of science
and technology on domestic and international
affairs. The office serves as a source of
scientific and technological analysis and
judgment for the President with respect to major
policies, plans and programs of the Federal
Government.

Internship Program. Interns are accepted for
one of three annual terms (Spring, Summer, or
Fall), which each last no more than 90
days. While these positions are without
compensation, the assignments provide
educational enrichment, practical work
experience, and network opportunities with other
individuals in the science and technology policy
arena.</span></p>
