marine renewable energy sector in Scotland and be
directly involved in helping Government achieve its
targets for renewable energy generation.

The potential for marine renewable energy around
Scotland’s coasts is huge, and the climate change,
social and economic benefits of utilising this
resource could be substantial. Scotland is
pioneering wave and tidal technologies and has a
significant role to play in developing the offshore
wind industry across the UK. Scottish Natural
Heritage (SNH) strongly supports the development of
marine renewable energy, recognising the significant
benefits it can deliver.

Our coasts and seas are of international importance
for marine wildlife. Our varied and intricate
coastline is valued for its scenery, tourism, for
recreation and as the location for much of
Scotland’s economic activity. In developing the
marine renewable energy sector we must take full
account of the social, economic and environmental
costs of development.

Our role is to offer advice, to Government and
others, on the impacts of renewable energy
generation on the natural heritage and to steer
developments to those locations best able to
accommodate them. We have a statutory duty to
comment on those applications which require EIA and
to protect and enhance the natural heritage. We also
have a duty to ensure compliance with EU nature
conservation Directives, which provide strict
protection for certain habitats and species. These
functions are delivered, primarily, by our Marine
Renewables Team, a small multi-disciplinary group of
advisers, whose work is focused upon this sector.

In response to rapid growth in the marine renewables
sector and increased requirements for our advice,
SNH wishes to recruit additional expertise on marine
ornithology. The post holder will be responsible for
providing scientific advice, developing guidance and
managing research on the potential impacts on bird
life of marine renewable technologies, and how these
might best be mitigated, managed and monitored.

The Marine Renewables Team sits largely within the
Coastal & Marine Ecosystems Unit within SNH’s
Policy and Advice Directorate. The post holder will
work closely with other specialists and Casework
Advisers within the Unit to provide sound and timely
scientific advice in response to consultations for
marine renewables and related developments affecting
Scotland’s seas. He or she will represent SNH with
industry and government and upon technical working
groups as appropriate. The post-holder will also be
expected to contribute to the wider work of the
Unit, inputting to PR, awareness raising and
training initiatives as relevant.</span></p>

responsible directing non-catch share observer
(NCS) activities in Oregon and Washington to
achieve program coverage goals and ensuring
observer safety standards are maintained in

Ecology Intern will assist in program
delivery, academics, research, group dynamics,
logistics, dive safety, student
transportation, and site security at the CIEE
Research Station.<span> </span>The position
is a combination of teaching assistant,
research assistant and resident hall
assistant.<span>
</span>Duties include assisting with:
preparations for classes and labs as
instructed by faculty; teaching; SCUBA diving
in support of CIEE courses and long-term
research projects; mentoring students; general
errands at the research station; and record
keeping for the dive safety program. The
internship is a 17 week commitment with little
down time and the normal work schedule
