<p>Newport, OR</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Several publications have resulted from the
ichthyoplankton collections describing the larval fish
community in the northern CC and its relation to local and
basin-scale environmental factors, as well as its
influence on salmon returns in the region. However, no
analyses have yet to be performed on these extensive data
sets. Such an analysis could be of immense importance to
furthering our understanding of the connectivity between
environmental change, early-life stages, and adult fish
recruitment, as well as have the potential to greatly
increase the ability of fisheries managers to predict
future adult stock sizes based on readily accessible
environmental and early-life stage data. The
investigation of this potentially vital link could be
accomplished at a very low cost as all of the
environmental and early-life stage samples, collected over
a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, have already
been collected, sorted, and analyzed. A cooperative
agreement has already been established that would allow
for the use of later-life stage fish data collected as
part of the annual groundfish survey in this collaborative
analysis.
</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Research Description: </p>
<p>The project will charter a fishing vessel to collect
information on larval and juvenile ground fishes in
coordination with an ongoing multi-year plankton and trawl
survey that takes place off of the Oregon and Washington
coasts aboard chartered commercial fishing vessels. The
cruises are done monthly in the spring and summer months
(5 four-day trips) and. Larval fish and invertebrates are
collected with a bongo net and juvenile fishes are
collected with a 20 x 30 m Nordic trawl lined with a fine
mesh liner. Before each tow, a CTD with an oxygen sensor
will be deployed. The bongo nets are preserved at sea and
sorted and identified in the lab. Juvenile fishes and
invertebrates from each tow are sorted at sea, frozen,
returned to the laboratory for identification and
enumeration, and lengths determined. Fish and
invertebrate densities will be determined for each station
along the transect lines.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>This position will be involved in all aspects of this
cooperative research project including participating in
the at sea research. The position is multidisciplinary
and will include a wide variety of tasks from species
identification to analyzing physical data collected during
the cruises. In addition, some time will be spent
maintaining and repairing electronics and/or pressure
housings. It is anticipated that approximately 15 days
will be spent at sea sampling. While not at sea, the
position will be preparing gear, forms, performing
literature reviews, writing reports, analyzing data,
working with samples collected, working with fishermen on
project details, and in general ensuring the success of
the project.

Consortium for Ocean Leadership</p>
<p>Washington, DC</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to
announce the search for a Program Associate for the Gulf
of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI). This is a regular,
full-time, exempt position. The position will report to
the GoMRI Project Administration Manager in the Research
and Education department.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>This position supports the coordination of grant
management administration, proposal review, post-award
administration, and communication and outreach efforts for
GoMRI. GoMRI is a BP-supported independent research
program involving $500M over ten years to study the effect
of the Deepwater Horizon incident and potential associated
impact of this and similar incidents on the environment
and public health, as well as to develop improved spill
mitigation, oil detection, characterization, and
remediation technologies.<br>

British Antarctic Survey</font></p>
<p>Cambridge, UK</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The British Antarctic Survey is inviting applications for
a 3-year postdoctoral research position to undertake
high-resolution model analysis to investigate dynamical
processes in the Southern Ocean.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>This position will contribute to a project funded by the
Natural Environment Research Council (NERC): Expose
(EXport Pathways Out of the Southern ocean and the Effect
on anthropogenic carbon sequestration).
</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The postdoctoral researcher will focus on studying the
dynamics associated with interior pathways ventilating the
Southern Ocean and sequestrating anthropogenic carbon
using a state-of-the art high-resolution ocean model and
its adjoint. The MITgcm-based Southern Ocean reanalysis
"Southern State Estimate (SOSE)" (<a
moz-do-not-send="true" href="http://sose.ucsd.edu/"
target="_blank">http://sose.ucsd.edu/</a>) will be used
to investigate Southern Ocean ventilation, and the adjoint
of the model will be run to trace back the pathways taken
by water-masses since their last contact with the surface
layer. Sensitivity analysis will be run to investigate the
critical dynamics at play in setting the Southern Ocean
ventilation and their possible change in the future. We
particularly seek a researcher with an interest and talent
in ocean model analysis and ability in running numerical
simulations to develop deeper dynamical understanding of
ocean circulation and climate. Direct previous experience
of running ocean models will be seen as a significant
advantage. The researcher will join a team of scientists
at the British Antarctic Survey and will strongly
collaborate with project partners at the National
Oceanography Centre, and in the USA (Johns Hopkins,
Hawaii, Scripps, Colorado State).</p>

Marine Station</font></p>
<p>Ft. Pierce, FL</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit in Fort Pierce,
Florida is located on the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), the
most diverse estuary in the U.S., and less than one mile
from the Atlantic Ocean. This unique educational facility
provides a window into these underwater worlds, offering a
variety of hands-on experiences to daily visitors, as well
as programming opportunities. Our focus is on displaying
ecosystems as complex communities of organisms interacting
in their environments. The six main exhibits are models of
local Florida ecosystems (seagrass bed, mangrove forest,
coral reef, etc.) and vary in size from 500 to 3,000
gallons. We also have a touch tank and a variety of
smaller displays.</p>
<p><br>
With the help of our dynamic displays we strive to provide
the public with a better understanding of the fragile
marine ecosystems of the IRL and surrounding area and the
impact humans are having on these fragile ecosystems. The
responsibilities of the Education Intern are to interpret
to visitors in the gallery and at the touch tank, lead
daily feeding tours for the public, lead educational
programs for school and groups, assist with special
events, and create educational displays. The education
intern may also assist aquarium husbandry staff with
routine duties, such as tank monitoring, cleaning,
specimen collection and feeding as needed. Additional
objectives can be developed with education staff based on
intern’s personal interests, strengths and/or experience.</p>
