JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK ECONOMICS FELLOW

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is now accepting applications =
for a

two-year, full-time Science Fellow to work on sustainable livestock economi=
cs. The

Fellow will work with NRDC=92s Health Program, a diverse team of advocates =
and

scientists, to help assess externalized costs of conventional livestock sys=
tems and

evaluate opportunities for transitioning to more sustainable alternatives. =
The Fellow

will be supported by NRDC=92s Science Center, which seeks to expand the org=
anization=92s

scientific capabilities and increase support for the role of science in pub=
lic policy.

Applications will be considered upon receipt until September 30, 2012

About NRDC

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national envir=
onmental

advocacy organization with more than 1.3 million members and online activis=
ts. We

have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, Los Ang=
eles and

Beijing. Our staff of over 400 includes attorneys, scientists, policy analy=
sts and

educators working to protect the environment and public health through advo=
cacy and

education.

Position Description

The environmental and social impacts of America=92s industrial livestock pr=
oduction

system are well documented. Impacts include habitat degradation and biodive=
rsity loss,

erosion and desertification, water and air pollution, harm to nearby commun=
ities, global

warming (contributing an estimated 18% of global emissions of heat-trapping=
 pollution

when emissions from related deforestation are taken into account), and exac=
erbation of

the rise in antibiotic resistance that poses serious risks to human health.=
 Profound

consolidation in the industry has caused economic challenges for many produ=
cers, and

dangerous conditions threaten the health and safety of meat packing and pro=
cessing

workers.

NRDC attorneys, scientists, and policy specialists are working to curb the =
worst impacts

from animal agriculture, while creating incentives to reward producers who =
demonstrate

environmental stewardship. Current projects focus on litigation and regulat=
ory

oversight of the Food and Drug Administration; direct engagement with large=
 retail

meat buyers to reform livestock supply chains; and pilot projects to incent=
ivize and

scale up alternative modes of production. The Fellow will contribute to thi=
s work by:

(1) conducting original research of costs and benefits of traditional and a=
lternative

livestock systems; (2) developing lay-language interpretations of existing =
literature for

policy makers, large retailers, and the general public; and (3) advising th=
e development

of campaign priorities and materials.

The Fellow will also develop one or more peer-reviewed, published articles =
and seek

out opportunities to disseminate this work and increase awareness of sustai=
nable

livestock production models. The Fellow will use NRDC=92s outreach capacity=
 and its

relationships with government and corporate decision-makers to communicate =
results as

they are available through presentations at professional conferences, prese=
ntations to

major buyers, blogs, and social media, ensuring their relevance to critical=
 policy and

private sector decision making processes. Areas of research may include:

=95 Cost-benefit analysis for transitioning away from animal agriculture=92=
s dependency

on antibiotics.

=95 Externalities imposed by industrial animal agriculture.

=95 Economic barriers and incentives for scaling up alternative production =
systems and

improved efficiencies within more sustainable production systems (for examp=
le,

greater utilization of whole carcasses, opportunities to reduce manure wast=
e in ways

that can generate both cost savings and new revenue opportunities).

The Fellow will be located in NRDC=92s San Francisco, Washington DC or New =
York

offices. During the two-year fellowship, the Fellow will also participate i=
n activities

related to NRDC=92s Science Center and receive additional guidance and ment=
oring from

Science Center staff.

Qualifications

NRDC seeks a Ph.D. economist, with experience in cost-benefit analysis and =
in valuing

natural systems or other harder-to-quantify endpoints. Expertise in agricul=
tural systems,

particularly livestock, is preferred but not required. The successful appli=
cant will have

excellent writing skills, enjoy working on an interdisciplinary team with p=
eople from

different professional backgrounds, and thrive in a fast paced environment.

This position is a challenging, entrepreneurial, and exciting opportunity f=
or the right

person. NRDC offers competitive salaries (based on a nonprofit scale and

commensurate with experience), excellent benefits, and a dynamic work envir=
onment,

and we are committed to workplace diversity. Applicants should submit a cov=
er letter,

resume and writing sample to: www.nrdc.org/jobs
