It is the WHOI BiTech project numbers that are the oddity.

Grant numbers from Federal Agencies are a matter of public record. As
you point out, they are available at agency websites.

BiTech project numbers are unique to WHOI. I believe the
'confidentiality' or non-publicizing of project numbers may have to do
with avoiding instances where someone charges someone else's project
without permission. Similar to telephone/copy codes.

Dear All - <br>
Is the confidentiality of grant numbers a concern these days? Anyone
with access to a computer can go to NSF's website and poke through
awarded grants and get grant numbers. Just wondering...<br>

Attached is an example of the new "standard WHOI C&P report" (Consensus
of all departments , Larry and Claire). It's not too different from our
current one, but will require some modifications.
