Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites <br>
applications for geoscience specialists to join a team of scientists and
<br>
programmers in the development of advanced data services for marine <br>
geoscience research. The successful candidates will work in support of
a <br>
new program supported by the National Science Foundation to improve <br>
access and preservation of data collected across the fleet for academic
<br>
oceanographic research within the United States. The project will <br>
involve the evaluation and documentation of a diversity of geological <br>
and oceanographic data sets obtained annually during scientific research
<br>
expeditions. The successful candidates can also expect to work with the
<br>
broader community of scientists and ship operators in the solicitation
<br>
of data and implementation of data services.<br>
<br>
These are full-time appointments with continuation beyond the first year
<br>
pending satisfactory progress and availability of funds. Staff Associate
<br>
position requires a Masters degree with two years relevant work <br>
experience or Bachelor degree with 4 years experience in earth or <br>
environmental science. Minimum requirement for the Data Manager <br>
Assistant position is a Bachelors degree in earth or environmental <br>
science. Experience with marine geoscience data desired. Knowledge
of <br>
database systems and data entry via SQL also beneficial. Familiarity <br>
with Unix/Linux, shell scripting (e.g. Perl, PHP, Python), and/or data
<br>
applications (e.g. ArcGIS, MATLAB, GMT) a strong asset. Detail-oriented
<br>
and excellent organizational skills required along with strong <br>
interpersonal skills and writing ability. Salary will be determined <br>
commensurate with experience. These are positions of Columbia <br>
University and carry all benefits for each specific position.<br>
