Burgeoning interest in deep scattering layer fisheries is confronted by the limited information on deep-sea ecology and the potential ecosystem effects of micronekton extraction. Improving our understanding of the ecosystem services provided by mesopelagic
communities, particularly with respect to their role as forage for pelagic predators, is necessary to inform responsible use of deep ocean resources. Focusing on surface to deep ocean coupling, my colleagues and I investigate how environmental variation structures
predator access to mesopelagic prey across mesoscale features, depth strata, and marine biomes. Based on an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of oceanography (both physical and biological) and ecology (at the community, seascape, and ecosystem
levels), our findings highlight the role of eddies in modulating pelagic predator foraging opportunities in a nutrient-poor subtropical gyre, how the combination of biotic and abiotic factors influence which particular scattering layer a predator targets,
and the potential importance of the understudied shallow scattering layer in enabling life in the open ocean.<br>
