<b><span style="background:white">Venturing into Palau’s Large-Scale Marine Protected Area</span></b><br>
<span style="background:white">In 2015, Palau established the Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS), a no-take large scale Marine Protected Area that covers 80 % of Palau’s Economic Exclusion Zone. The remaining 20 % of the EEZ was designated as commercial
and artisanal domestic fishing zones. The establishment of PNMS extended Palau’s conservation efforts from nearshore to deep-sea and pelagic environments. After a 5-year ‘wind down’ period, the PNMS came into full effect in January 2020. The overarching aim
of the PNMS is to conserve Palau’s ocean heritage and marine biodiversity, whilst increasing the sustainable contribution of the ocean to livelihoods and human wellbeing. The PNMS is thus committed to both ocean conservation as well as the development of sustainable
ocean resource use. But what does science and research look like in this large, remote oceanscape – with limited resources, expertise and changing politics?</span><br>
