<b><span style="background:white">Who, What, and Why: Toward a Better Understanding of Antarctic Fishes</span></b><br>
<span style="background:white">Fishes in the suborder Notothenioidei represent the majority of ichthyofaunal diversity in the Southern Ocean. The extreme and isolated Antarctic environment, which has contributed to the evolution of this unique assemblage of
fishes, also limits our understanding of notothenioid biology. The Palmer Antarctica Long-Term Ecological Research Program (Palmer LTER) was created in 1993 to determine the impacts of climate change on the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) pelagic environment.
Larval fishes collected as bycatch during Palmer LTER sampling over the last 30+ years provide a unique opportunity to study notothenioid fishes using a long-term, multifaceted approach in a rapidly changing environment. In this seminar, I will discuss three
components of my doctoral research using the novel time series from the Palmer LTER: who – uncovering novel fish diversity through integrative taxonomy, what – the impacts of climate change on the Antarctic Silverfish, and why – experimental determination
of thermal tolerances for the early life stages of notothenioids. Collectively, these results inform ongoing efforts to protect the WAP region from continued anthropogenic impact through the creation of a marine protected area.</span><br>
