The cellular microenvironment is a combination of biological interactions, chemical factors, and mechanical stimuli. All of these have been investigated in vitro individually; however, the in vivo environment
exposes cells to all of these at the same time. This leads to synergistic and antagonistic effects between biologics, chemicals, and mechanics. My work engineered the needed instrumentation for studying complex mechanical stimuli (shear stress, cyclic stretch,
hydrostatic pressure, and material properties), to evaluate the sex-specific response to complex stimuli using the vascular niche as a model microenvironment, and to develop biomaterials that stimulate cells using DNA aptamer-collagen complex systems for hard
(bone) and soft (vascular) tissue engineering. Collectively, this work demonstrates the need to appreciate the complex interactions of biologics, chemical factors, and mechanical stimuli in regulating cell fate and in biomaterials design. I conclude by relating
how biomaterials science can support environmental science to address the potential impacts of plastic pollution.
