We are always welcoming new members to help conduct outreach and also to join our steering committee, which organizes outreach training and opportunities. Below is some information if you are interested in getting involved.<br class=""><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><ul class=""><li class=""><b class="">What is BIG</b>: The WHOI <a href="https://web.whoi.edu/big/" class="">Broader Impacts Group (BIG)</a> is a group that includes students, post-docs, scientists, tech staff, and other volunteers at WHOI. We organize and conduct classroom outreach, a blog, training workshops, and any other idea that we think up that is related to communicating science to the general public. Even through COVID, we have kept up our outreach and we will continue to do so virtually as long as necessary.</li><li class=""><b class="">How can you get involved</b>: If you are interested in either conducting outreach or becoming involved in the steering committee, <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1iy8G8mf-CBadomYnwRy_5cI8xarktg3rj6g6mu_AGzw/edit" class="">please fill out this form</a> Even if you have filled out a similar form in the past, it is great if you could fill it out again so that we can keep an up-to-date record of those who are intersted in participating in outreach.</li><li class=""><b class="">How is BIG increasing outreach to schools with diverse students</b>: BIG has already started a close collaboration with New Heights Charter School in Brockton (you can still sign up to participate in <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf3BVoMEs1OwG_1HW58Cl8kv67GOH_CCEGgw5U6JEdoepYIfA/viewform" class="">Ask-a-Scientist</a> . We are also working closely with the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) academic recruitment to establish K-12 outreach to schools with a large URM, ESL, and free and reduced lunch student populations. See the bottom of sign up form above if you would specifically like to participate in outreach to schools with large diverse student populations.</li><li class=""><b class="">How can you join a steering committee meeting</b>: we are holding an open steering committee meeting <b class=""><i class="">March 22 at 3pm</i> </b><a href="https://mit.zoom.us/j/99963070558" class="">on zoom</a>. We will be discussing upcoming opportunities to run workshops focused on teaching diverse populations and including outreach statements in grants to support diverse outreach. Join us on zoom if you are intersted in learning more about BIG and/or the steering committee.
